The Stunning Saphire Coast

September 4th

Odometer: 714 km

Our time on the coast is coming to an end. We have really enjoyed Bermagui, I can highly recommend it. Such a great little town, it feels like Noosa in the 1980’s. The extra distance from Melbourne and Sydney has kept it from over-development for the moment. We have enjoyed our daily walks over the headlands, across the beaches, and to the Blue Pool. Spotting the seals frolicking in the waves and the telltale “blows” of the many whales that are heading down the coast at this time of the year. I also managed to hire a kayak for a couple of hours and paddled around the harbour and wetlands. So peaceful!

Following tips from a number of you, we visited the towns of Tathra (great coastal drive down to there, more amazing old bridges, stunning coastlines and wetlands) and Eden (the small Killer Whale museum there has some great stories about how a local pod of killer whales worked together with the local whalers to bring in the whales in exchange for a portion of the catch).

We also returned to Tilba to stock up on more chocolate, cheese and the local wine. Tilba Valley Winery and Brewery is a lovely little spot, I can imagine sitting on the deck there in “the before time”, listening to concerts, looking over the vines and the dam.

Traveling during a pandemic is surely interesting. We are stocked up on hand sanitiser and masks, have a tent with us in case we can’t find accomodation, and regularly check for opening times etc. We have to remain flexible, I try to book about a week ahead and keep an eye out on the news updates.

Everybody we have spoken to is very friendly. The small amount of travellers we do meet tend to be pensioners who’s cruises have been cancelled.

Stay with us, follow me and sign up to receive ongoing blogs. I aim to get them out every 2-3 days! I quite enjoy doing it.

Spoiler alert, I have just booked the week ahead and we will be going through a Police Checkpoint for Victoria in the High Country…. will we make it back…..

  • Best coffee: Gulaga Organics in Bermagui
  • Accomodation: still in the Penthouse at Marina Vista Appartments, Bermagui
  • Tip: two hour kayak rental from Bermagui Bait & Tackle for only $20
